On February 18 I spoke in the Legislature in favour of Destination BC, a crown corporation with a mandate to market BC as a tourist destination. While in favour of this initiative, I also noted a few serious reservations about the funding and leadership of the organization. Specifically, I am concerned that the legislation allows the Minister responsible to ultimately direct Destination BC’s decisions, while also failing to ensure a transparent and stable funding model.
Therefore, I urged the government to address these issues including, making Destination BC industry led with representation from rural stakeholders. Rising in the house was also a great opportunity to draw attention to some of the excellent tourism opportunities we have in our area. I was able to highlight over a dozen tourism operators, businesses and events from the region.
